It is a classic chicken-and-the-egg problem. There is a serious bootstrapping problem where to have a self-sustaining multiplayer game you need players and you can’t get players without having players. I want you to understand how much work is required before you decide to make a multiplayer game. I think one of the hardest things a small, first time studio can do is make a multiplayer game and they underestimate what it takes to succeed. This is a warning to studios trying to make a multiplayer indie game. I am telling this story not because I think you should do this. This is one of those amazing successes for an indie multiplayer game. In the 2 weeks since they launched, they sold 1,800,000 UNITS. NOTE: The in-game server has a few limitations: no special characters in the name or password, the name must be more than three letters, and no spaces are allowed. This is a story about how 3 developers managed to make a massively multiplayer online shooter that gained over 800,000 wishlists before launch resulting in over 87,323 simultaneous players. Enter the needed information and click "Create" to open up your server. When it reaches the end, the in-game server hosting menu will pop up. From there, hold down the multiplayer button. If you are not on Windows or you would like to join your own server, start the game as normal. Follow the instructions on there and your server will be up for everyone to join. Now, instead of choosing to play the game, choose to launch the dedicated server hoster. If you are on Windows and would like to host a dedicated server (one which you yourself cannot join), first find RFMP in your Steam library and click play. To do so, check the various links and posts in #faq on the RFMP discord server. The first step to host a server is to forward port 7777 (unless you want to play over LAN, in which case ignore this paragraph).
